You know the one: The moment you realize Thanksgiving is mere days away, which means that holiday season is here whether you are ready for it or not, which means there are only six weeks left to the end of one year and beginning of another one. 6 Fridays from now, it will be January 1, 2010.

But the bit we forget is that it is in itself a creative process. Those right questions aren’t just kind of lying around on the ground to be picked up and asked. When I go back and look at the great leaders — Roosevelt, Churchill — one of the things that occurs to me is they somehow had the ability to frame the question in a way that nobody else would have thought about. In design, that’s everything, right? If you don’t ask the right questions, , then you’re never going get to the right solution. I spent too much of my career feeling like I’d done a really good job answering the wrong question.”

- CO2Partners - Just Ask Leadership: Tim Brown Chief Executive of Ideo - It’s all about the Question

The 10 Faces of Innovation | Fast Company

The 10 Faces of Innovation | Fast Company:
Need to study this.
Starts with explaining how dangerous the devil’s advocate is to innovation and new ideas seeing the light of day. Let’s play ball…

What is it?

Let’s say you are the manager. Tacit approval happens when:

a) a direct-report of yours does something wrong
b) you become aware of it
c) that direct-report and/or others within your workplace are aware of both a) and b)
d) you do nothing about it and let it slide

As a result, you have given tacit approval for that wrong which was committed.

Your silent message to everyone else can be interpreted in several different ways, and none of them are good…

TS/SA: Students Need the Life Skill of Caring and Speaking Up

TS/SA: Students Need the Life Skill of Caring and Speaking Up

All Things Workplace: One More Time: What Do People Want At Work?

All Things Workplace: One More Time: What Do People Want At Work?:
By Steve Roesler:

Every employee survey I’ve seen over the past 30 years shows the same results as this, conducted in 2007 by Towers Perrin. The survey population was 90,000 employees, worldwide.

What do Employees Want?

The #1 element on a global level was an employee’s belief that senior management was interested in his or her well-being.

Imagine.

Employee’s relate their success on the job to feeling cared for and about. Not money, not flex time, but feeling that people above them care about their well-being.

[…]

We’ve Done The Work For You

It’s only a bit more involved and systematic than I’ve described. After reviewing volumes of research in performance, productivity, effectiveness, and change, we’ve boiled down the findings into five categories of what employees say they want in order to “be their best”:

1. Employees want to have a “good fit” in the organization, one that matches their skills and interests at a given time.

2. Employees want to be clear about their job: what is really expected and how it will be measured.

3. Employees want managers and organizations who support what they’re doing and get roadblocks out of the way.

4. Employees want to feel valued for who they are and what they bring that is unique.

5. Employees want to be part of something that inspires them. There are lots of ways to earn money. But over the long-term, they (we) want to be part of something that lifts us up because there is something personally meaningful about it.

So, how do you develop sustained performance and satisfaction?

Scratch the survey. Sit down and talk with your people about these five things and how each one is going. Then listen. Then, figure out together how to move things along the great curve of life.

Let’s cut to the chase: Do The Daily 5 Minutes!

Listen: Be a Better Manager/Colleague | The blog of RTSL.eu - Development with SAS®

Listen: Be a Better Manager/Colleague | The blog of RTSL.eu - Development with SAS®:
Very cool…

You can practice your listening skills on a day-to-day basis. I’ve seen success with the adoption of Rosa Say’s Daily 5 Minutes (D5M) working pattern. It’s aimed at managers but is equally effective when used amongst peers.
